The #5 Howard Community College Women's Lacrosse team ended their season with a heartbreaking loss in the Region XX semi-finals to Nassau Community College by a score of 13-12. Nassau scored on a free position shot with 12 seconds left in the game to end the Dragons season.
Both teams came out at the start of the game firing in a contest that was full of goal streaks. Nassau started off the scoring at the 27:06 mark in the first half as Guilana Rizzotti put in the first of her three goals. Less then two minutes later, Dragons midfielder Erica Heaphy (Columbia, MD, Centennial HS) responded with her first of a five goal day for her. HCC briefly took the lead as defender Sam Irvin (Ellicott City, MD, Wilde Lake HS) netted a goal to take advantage of a penalty on Nassau.
Howard and Nassau then exchanged goals as Kerri Baum scored her first of five goals on the day for Nassau followed up by HCC's Heaphy giving the Dragon's a 3-2 advantage. Nassau went on a four goal tear leaving the Dragons trailing 6-3. Howard was able to bring the game back to one goal before halftime with two goals scored by Rebeka Coughlin (Sykesville, MD, Liberty HS) who also ended the game with five goals.
As the second half began the game began to game got increasingly physical with a string of fouls and yellow cards by Nassau leading to a red card for Nassau's Brittany Trogele which led to the Dragons getting a man up opportunity for four minutes. The Dragons were able to score two goals during that man up opportunity with goals coming from Charlotte Wilkinson (Hanover, MD, Howard HS) and Katja Randazzo (Ellicott City, MD, Howard HS) leading to the the dragons reclaiming the lead 10-9.
The Dragons then gave up three straight goals in a four minute period of time relinquishing the lead for what turned out to be for the last time. Howard showed a lot of heart fighting back to tie the game up at 12 goals each which carried till the final minute of the game.
Ellie Garvey (Elkridge, MD, Francis Scott Key) had a career day in the cage making 14 saves in the cage which is the most saves she has tallied in a single game all season. Nicole Cote also contributed seven ground balls, however, the Dragons struggled in the second half with possession turning the ball over 16 times which ultimately lead to their demise after turning the ball over just eight times in the first half.
The Dragons finished their season with a 9-3 overall record and 3-1 in the MD JUCO conference and claimed a share of the conference title.
