Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Fired Up Dragons Squad Upsets #2 Onondaga 7-5

The Howard CC women's lacrosse team completed one of the biggest victories in the history of the program as they defeated #2 ranked Onondaga CC 7-5. The win improves the Dragons to 4-0 on the season and will surely see them move up from their current #4 ranking in the NJCAA.

There was controversy even before the game started as defensive star Nicole Cote (Elkridge, MD, Long Reach High School) was deemed to have an illegal stick in the pre-game inspections and was therefore penalized for 2 minutes to start the game. This would not stop the Dragons from being aggressive as Cassidy Delaney (Ellicott City, MD, Marriotts Ridge High School) vacuumed in the draw control which led to a free position goal by Rebeka Coughlin (Sykesville, MD, Liberty High School). A couple minutes later, it was Onondaga's turn at a free position shot but all-star goalie Ellie Garvey (Elkridge, MD, Francis Scott Key) made the first of her 8 saves in the game including an 80% save percentage in the first half.

After the Lazers tied the game at 1-1 the Dragons got their 3rd straight draw control, this time thanks to Cote as the first of her game high 3 draw controls. Delaney was fouled for a free position attempt and although her first shot was saved, she was able to get the ground ball and the second attempt found the back of the net. Five minutes later Coughlin forced a turnover and finished an incredible diving shot as she was being fouled to increase the Dragons lead to 2. A long dry spell ensued and was finally broken with 7 minutes left in the first half when Delaney scored her 2nd on a free position shot.

The start of the second half saw Onondaga get the draw control but quickly turned the ball over thanks to one of the many great defensive plays by Danielle Spencer (Rockville, MD, Richard Montgomery High School) in the game. Another free position goal on a man-up by Delaney to complete her hat trick gave HCC a 5-1 lead. Onondaga answered back quickly with 3 straight goals and looked to have tied the game with another one except the referees deemed the Lazers stick was illegal and the goal was waived off.

HCC got the eventual game winning goal when Silvia Kim (Clarksville, MD, River Hill High School) collected a ground ball and sprinted down the left side then found a wide open Coughlin in the middle as the star midfielder completed her hat trick. Two minutes later Coughlin scored again for her 4th of the game to improve the HCC lead to 7-4 with just 7 minutes left. The job was not yet done as Onondaga scored just 20 seconds later and got the following draw control as well as they looked to force a come back. However, it was once again Spencer who intercepted a pass from behind Garvey's goal to stop Onondaga's momentum and HCC was able to hold onto the ball for almost the entirety of the last 6 minutes of the game to see off the monumental victory for the Dragons.

The Dragons will now enjoy a well deserved rest as their next scheduled game isn't until April 5th when the Dragons are scheduled to travel to Anne Arundel CC for a 5:00 PM start.
