Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Dragons Win First Region XX Championship in Program History

In the first season under the tutelage of head coach Brett Ponchione, the Howard Community College women's lacrosse team won the Region XX tournament for the first time in program history as they were able to upset the #1 seeded Harford CC Fighting Owls 15-12.

The Dragons were once again led by freshman Cassidy Delaney (Ellicott City, MD, Marriotts Ridge High School) who scored five goals in the game, four of which on free position shots, on her way to being named to the Region XX tournament offensive MVP as she scored 16 goals in the Dragons three tournament games. Delaney had scored just one goal in the two regular contests between Howard CC and Harford CC, but was clearly eager to make more of a presence in this game. Delaney also grabbed 9 draw controls in the game to help the Dragons dominate possession in the game.

On the other side of the field, goalkeeper Ellie Garvey (Elkridge, MD, Francis Scott Key) had arguably her best game of her illustrious two-year career with the Dragons as she came up with 14 huge saves and was named as the Regions XX tournament defensive MVP. Garvey provided the highlight of the season in the game as she was able to make a save for the ages late in the game.

With the Dragons holding onto a 15-12 lead and just under five minutes left in the game, a questionable foul call left Garvey out of her net on a Harford restart. Star defender Nicole Cote (Elkridge, MD, Long Reach High School) attempted to fill the crease to block an Owls shot into the empty net. Unfortunately, this action calls for a direct red card that saw Cote ejected from the game. Harford Sierra Donovan was then given a free position attempt with Garvey still not able to get back into her goal crease, but Donovan's low shot was saved by the sprawling effort by Garvey to get her stick in the way and deflect the ball away from the path of the goal. The save helped propel Garvey to holding the Owls to converting just 2-11 free position shots on the day.

Harford CC got out to an early 2-0 lead before the Dragons struck back with 5 goals in a row. The Owls then went on a 4-0 run of their own to take the lead back late in the first half. That is when the Dragons went on a championship winning run that saw Ford tie the game at 6-6 before Ivana Yakovleff (Columbia, MD, Springbrook High School) used a brilliant spin move to score the go ahead goal with under two minutes left in the first half. The Dragons would keep the lead for the rest of the game as they continued on to scoring 7 straight goals.

Cote was one of five Dragons named to the all-tournament team which also included midfielder Rebeka Coughlin (Sykesville, MD, Liberty High School) who was dominant in the face-off circle pulling down 7 draw controls while also tallying 2 goals, 1 assist, 3 ground balls, and 3 caused turnovers in a fantastic performance. Silvia Kim (Clarksville, MD, River Hill High School) was also given the all-tournament award as she also collected 1 goal and 2 assists while also getting 7 ground balls in the game.

Audrey Ford (Woodbine, MD, Glenelg HS) was named to the team thanks to her timely goal scoring as she put in two more goals in the final game using her blazing speed that has been on display all year. Defender Danielle Spencer (Rockville, MD, Richard Montgomery High School) was the final Dragon named despite not compiling significant statistics in the game but played spectacular defense throughout the tournament.
