Second Half Struggles Keep Dragons Out of Win Column

Columbia, MD - Howard Community College's JV men's basketball team lost their tenth-straight contest last Thursday, falling 67-53 to Washington Adventist.

The Dragons led the Shock 29-25 at the half, but were outscored 42-24 in the second. Howard's Jasper Hanna (Washington, DC/E.L. Haynes) set a new program-record for points in a game with 21, but it wasn't enough for the Dragons to overcome the Shock. The loss was the second-straight defeat at the hands of WAU.

Howard controlled the first half, building a lead as high as 11-4. Capitalizing on Shock foul trouble, the Dragons held a multi-score lead for most of the half. What kept the Shock in the game was turnovers, with Howard committing 15. The Dragons led 29-25 at the half, but their control of the game had been challenged.

Washington Adventist came out of the break swinging, quickly tying things up and pulling ahead. Howard edged back into the contests, scoring off a Truce Norton (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) layup and a successful trip to the free throw line for Bliden Elung (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills). Stewart Long's (Annapolis, MD/Springdale Prep) fastbreak layup made it a two-point game, and for a moment the Dragons looked poised to snatch back the lead. That moment never came, and although Hanna kept scoring for the Dragons, Howard's defense fell short. The Dragons fell behind by double-digits, making just one shot in the final two minutes.

Hanna set a new program record with 21 points, while also dropping eight rebounds, three blocks, and three steals. Bliden Elung (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) had an excellent night with 12 points and five rebounds, while Truce Norton (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) scored eight points, five rebounds, and three assists. Nehemiah Smith (Bronx, NY/Laurel) was held scoreless, but he did record eleven rebounds, eight blocks, and a steal. Stewart Long (Annapolis, MD/Springdale Prep) added eight points off the bench.

The Dragons wrap up their home schedule Wednesday night at 6:00 PM against Harcum College's JV team.
