Washington, DC - Year two for the Howard Community College Dragons flag football program ended in rough fashion, as the Dragons suffered a lopsided loss to the Gallaudet University Bison.
Howard trailed 46-0 at the half to the Bison, but strong defensive play in the second half held the Bison to just one additional touchdown.
The Dragons got the ball to start the contest, with sophomore
Avery Richardson (Beltsville, MD/High Point) recording the first catch of the season. Freshman quarterback
Ramiya Malik (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch), an offseason transfer from Cecil College, got the Dragons to midfield several times through the opening quarter. A strong Bison defense prevented any further advancement, and Gallaudet led 22-0 after the first.
An early safety in the second quarter made it 24-0 Bison, and Gallaudet scored thrice more to make it 46-0 at the half. The third quarter saw the Dragons begin to fight back, aided by several solid defensive plays.
London Galbraith (Washington, D.C./Friendship Collegiate Academy) recorded an interception in the end zone, and
Georgia Day (Columbia, MD/Long Reach) tipped a pass to keep the Bison from scoring. But Gallaudet managed to score one final touchdown before the game was called after the third quarter.
Up Next: Howard will play host to a full weekend of NCFFL football this weekend, beginning with a showdown against Kean University on Saturday, March 28 at 10:20 AM.
