COLUMBIA, MD – Howard Community College has announced the appointment of Mark Winkel as Director of Esports, officially placing the longtime program architect at the helm of one of the nation's most successful two-year college esports programs.
Winkel previously led the Dragons esports program from 2020 to 2024, building the program from the ground up and transforming it into a national contender across multiple game titles. Under his leadership, Howard Community College captured seven National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) conference championships and established itself as one of the premier esports programs in the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE).
"Mark's vision, leadership, and commitment to student success helped establish Howard Community College as a nationally recognized esports destination," said Howard Community College associate vice president of athletics Mike Smelkinson. "His proven track record of competitive excellence and program development makes him the ideal person to lead the next chapter of Dragons esports."
After launching the program in 2020, Winkel quickly guided Howard to success on the national stage. The Dragons reached the NJCAAE Rocket League National Championship match in 2021, finishing as national runners-up in one of the program's first major postseason appearances.
The following year, Howard achieved the pinnacle of collegiate esports competition. The Dragons captured the 2022 national championship in Overwatch, earning the first national title in program history and cementing Howard's status among the elite programs in collegiate esports.
Throughout his tenure, Winkel emphasized both competitive success and student development. His teams consistently qualified for postseason play while fostering an environment focused on teamwork, leadership, communication, and academic achievement.
In addition to the program's national championship and national runner-up finish, Howard teams secured seven NECC conference titles across multiple esports titles including Overwatch, Rocket League, League of Legends, and Valorant; showcasing the depth and versatility of the Dragons' competitive roster.
As Director of Esports, Winkel will oversee all aspects of the program, including competitive operations, recruitment, student-athlete development, community engagement, and strategic growth initiatives. His return to a leadership role comes as esports continues to expand throughout higher education, creating new opportunities for student participation, scholarships, and career pathways.
"I am honored to continue serving Howard Community College and the esports student-athletes who represent our institution," Winkel said. "Building this program from its inception has been one of the most
rewarding experiences of my career. I look forward to continuing to grow the program, supporting our students, and competing for championships at the regional and national levels."
With a proven history of success and a foundation built on competitive excellence, Howard Community College enters a new era of esports under the leadership of the individual who helped create the program's championship tradition.
