Columbia, MD - Howard Community College announced today that Cole Harshman has been named the third head coach of the Dragons' JV men's basketball team.

Additionally, Harshman will continue to serve as assistant coach of the varsity men's basketball team, a role he has served for the last two seasons.

"Cole has contributed to regional titles for us both as a player and an assistant coach," said associate vice president of athletics Mike Smelkinson. "This is an exciting next step for him in his continued development, and he is ready to begin his head coaching career as a Dragon, while remaining a vital piece to the varsity coaching staff."

Harshman joined the Dragons as an assistant coach in 2024. He helped Howard win the 2024-25 NJCAA Region 20 Tournament and make the National Tournament, where Howard made the Elite Eight. He will continue to serve as an assistant coach for the Dragons while taking on the head coaching position of the JV program.

Harshman attended Dulaney High School and played one season for Scotland Prep after graduation. He initially signed to play for King University in Bristol, Tennessee, before transferring to Howard. Harshman played for head coach Mike Smelkinson from 2019 to 2022 as a shooting guard, making 23 career starts and averaging 6.6 points per game. He was a part of the Dragons 2019-20 Region 20 championship team and helped the Dragons make the playoffs in both of his seasons.

After Howard, Harshman transferred to Frostburg State University for his last two seasons of eligibility. He helped the Bobcats make the 2024 Mountain East Conference Tournament before graduating at seasons end.
