Ivan Alvarado was named the head coach of the cross country and track & field teams in January 2019.
Alvarado had been in charge of the Atholton High track & field programs since 2013 where his many accomplishments included nine individual state champions, more than 25 county champions, and multiple regional championships. Alvarado coached the Baltimore Sun Sports Athlete of the Year in 2015 and led the women's team to a county championship in 2018.
In addition to his track & field duties, Alvarado also coached the Atholton cross country teams from 2013-2017 where they had three straight state championship appearances and led the boys team to a fourth place finish in the state meet in 2013. He also coached the Oakland Mills High School cross country team in the 2018 season.
Alvarado was raised in Glendale, California where he was a four year varsity runner. He went on to Glendale Community College where he was a four-time California Junior College All-American including twice as a cross country runner, once running the 800 meters, and once in the 3000 meter steeple chase. He went on to compete at the University of Utah in 2003 where he was second in the 800 meters for the indoor track team.Â
Alvarado joined the United States Airforce where he served from 2007-2012 and was honorably discharged. He competed for the USAF base team where he placed in the top four in the half-marathon evens in 2007 and 2008.
Alvarado currently resides in Columbia, MD and holds USATF and NFHS coaching certifications.
