Denison Long joined the Dragons as associate head coach of track & field in 2026.
Prior to Howard, Long served as an assistant coach for track & field at CCBC Essex, focusing on sprints, hurdles, and relays as well as strength and conditioning for all speed and power events. Under his watch, the Knights won the 2026 NJCAA Region 20 women's outdoor track & field championship.
Long served as an assistant coach in short sprints for the University of Maryland-Baltimore County from 2019 to 2023, coaching six individual athletes to top-ten marks in program history. Before UMBC, he coached at Bowie State University from 2016-2019. At BSU, Long assisted with sprints, short relays, and hurdles. His accomplishments at Bowie State include coaching Davon Carroll to three school records and two All-American honors, leading the high jump squad to a 2019 championship, and finishing in the top-three twice at the CIAA outdoor championships.
Long attended Elenaor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland. He won two Maryland 4A State Championships, taking the indoor 300m title in 2009 and the outdoor 100m in 2010. During the 2009 indoor season, Long was named Prince George's County Athlete of the Year.
After high school, Long attended Florida International University, where he set four freshman records and set the schools' all-time 60m record. He transferred to UMBC in the fall of 2011, where he set an avalanche of records. These included:
- 2013 America East Indoor 60m and 200m champion
- 2013 Indoor AEC Most Valuable Athlete
- 2013 AEC 100m, 200, and 4x100m champion
- 2013 Outdoor AEC Most Valuable Athlete
- Scored the most points across both the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2013
- 2014 AEC Outdoor 100m and 200m champion
- 2014Â Outdoor AEC Most Valuable Athlete
- Two-time NCAA East Regional Championship qualifier
- 2014 IC4A Outdoor 100m champion
Long set the 100m and 200m meet records for UMBC in 2014 and sits third all-time in school history for both events. He was invited to compete in the 2014 USA Track & Field Championships in the 60m dash. He reached the semifinals in that event.
Long graduated from UMBC in 2014 with a degree in Business Administration.
