Ken Heydt enters his first season at Howard Community College as an Assistant Coach for the men's soccer team under Head Coach Rob Ryerson. Coach Heydt will support program operations, including player development, game strategy, training curriculum, recruitment, and student-athlete academic advising.
Prior to joining HCC, Heydt was an active member of the Howard County soccer community as a player, coach, administrator, and consultant—most recently serving as an Advisor for FC Ellicott City and previously as the President of Ellicott City SC.
A former collegiate player, Heydt was a four-year letter winner at The University of Akron, competing in multiple NCAA Division I tournaments on nationally ranked teams that won four consecutive Ohio Collegiate Soccer Championships. He remains an active alumnus of the Akron program, which has made six College Cup appearances and won the 2010 Division I National Championship.
Heydt's local background includes a successful career at Oakland Mills High School (Columbia, MD) playing under legendary coach Al Goldstein. The Scorpions won three consecutive State Championships and were ranked as the top high school team in the state for three consecutive years. Coach Heydt was an All-State player and captained the undefeated 1982 team alongside current HCC Head Coach Rob Ryerson, finishing with a high school career record of 58-1-1.
Coach Heydt's Division I coaching experience includes serving three years as the Associate Head Coach at The University of Hartford during its transition to the Division I North Atlantic Conference. In this role, he established an international scouting and recruiting operation, managed player development, led strategic match planning, and supported alumni relations and fundraising. Coach Heydt also has attained United Soccer Coaches Premier Diploma.
Professionally, Heydt recently completed a 35-year career with Allegis Group Inc. (Hanover, MD) and is active with the management consulting firm Accenture.
A resident of Ellicott City, Maryland, Heydt enjoys spending time with his wife, Suze, and their daughters, Rachael and Lauren. A favorite motivational quote that Coach Heydt strives to live by is from soccer legend Pelé: "Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."
