Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Shorthanded Dragons Beat Westmoreland 3-0

The HCC men's soccer team went into the weekend with a depleted squad having four regular starters unable to participate in the game. Thankfully for the Dragons faithful, the men were able to pull it together and come away with a 3-0 win over Westmoreland County CC.

WCCC came to town with just 12 players active, and quickly the Dragons were able to control possession and take advantage of their opponents lack of numbers. However, despite the dominating possession that HCC was able to enjoy, the touches in the final 3rd resulted in few chances on goal.

It wasn't until Coach DePinto, subbing for the absent Coach Draganov, went to his bench and put Rogers Kiriggwajjo (Uganda, Old Kampala SSS) at the forward position to try and jumpstart the offense. The move worked immediately as Jonathan Horrocks (Clarksville, MD, Mt. Hebron HS) pass found Kiriggwajjo at the top of the box and a brilliant strike found the back of the net just 30 seconds after taking the field.

The second half proved very familiar as the Dragons continued to struggle with the ball in the final third of the field, along with some impressive goalkeeper play by WCCC. It took until the 74th minute for the Dragons to find another goal as Horrocks was again the distributor and this time Edgardo Gonzalez (Beltsville, MD, High Point HS) was the beneficiary.

The final nail in the coffin was in the 87th minute as a nice pass from Jason Mitchell (Dayton, MD, Washington Christian Academy) put his teammate Alec Smith (Columbia, MD, River Hill HS) through to make it a 3-0 game.

The Dragons next face a stiff opponent as nationally ranked in DI CCBC Essex comes to town on Tuesday October 13th at 4:00 PM. The Knights are 9-1 in MD JUCO play and will look to improve their chances to clinch an MD JUCO title while the Dragons need a win to get back into the mix at the top of the standings.
