Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

HCC Falls Just Short of Upset Bid at Harford

The HCC men's soccer team traveled to Harford Community College for a MD JUCO conference showdown and ultimately lost 1-0 in a tightly played match.

HCC is currently dealing with an epidemic of injuries as 6 players, all of which are either starters or regular contributors, were inactive for the contest. Despite this adversity, the Dragons really put in a great effort as they essentially stayed even throughout the match against their Division I opponent. Jonathan Horrocks (Clarksville, MD, Mt. Hebron HS) who has recently been moved up to midfield from his usual center back position, had the best chance for the Dragons in the 1st half as his header on goal looked dangerous but was saved by the Owls goalkeeper.

Harford pressed the Dragons for much of the first half, but the combined efforts of the center back play from Tyler Costopoulos (Olney, MD, Sherwood HS) and Leandro Hernandez (Silver Spring, MD, Spencerville Adventist Academy) was strong throughout the game to protect goalie Brayan Czepinski (Ellicott City, MD, Marriotts Ridge HS) who finished the game with 8 saves.

In the second half it was newly minted forward Sam Rivera (Sykesville, MD, Chapelgate Christian) who came closest to scoring as his long range shot was cut out by the goalie. Forward Rogers Kiriggwajjo (Uganda, Old Kampala SSS) came off the bench for the Dragons and put a dangerous shot on goal in the 64th minute. However, Owls goalkeeper Justin Almquist hit a long boot down the field that was flicked on to the path of Corey Alt whose shot from the corner of the box found its way over Czepinski and into the net for the lone goal of the night.

The Dragons fall to 9-6-1 on the year and stay at 6th place in the MD JUCO standings. HCC will finish off their regular season schedule on Monday October 19th as they host CCBC Catonsville at 4:00 PM.
