Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Harford Edges Out Dragons

The HCC women's volleyball team got off to a roaring start against rivals Harford, but ultimately failed in their attempt to upset the powerhouse Owls team losing 3-1.

The Dragons and Owls were neck and neck for the entire first set until a run of four straight points on Essence Holtzclaw (Atlanta, GA, Arundel HS) service put the Dragons ahead 23-19. The set was capped off with a couple of blazing kills by Chelsea Parrinello (Finksburg, MD, Westminster HS) to excite the Dragons Lair crowd and put Howard ahead 1-0.

Harford came out in the 2nd set firing as they got up 12-5 due to some unforced errors by the Dragons. HCC fought back as Stephanie Bartylla (Westminster, MD, Manchester Valley HS) recorded three straight kills as the Dragons fought back to a 13-12 deficit. After that it was all Owls as Harford went on to win the set 25-17.

The 3rd set saw the Dragons jump out to an early lead as Harford was plagued by attack errors, but a 9-1 run by Harford allowed them to close out the set 25-20 and take a 2-1 lead.

The final set was equally as entertaining as Harford jumped out to an early lead but the Dragons again clawed their way back into it. Key kills by Taylor Bowen (Mount Airy, MD, South Carroll HS), Parrinello, and Bartylla saw the Dragons work their way to a 21-21 tie, but Harford came back with three straight aces by Janessa Fauntroy closed out the match for the Owls.

Top contributors for the Dragons included Parrinello with 16 kills, Bartylla with 6, and Bowen with 4. Setter Julia Boras (Baltimore, MD, Oakland Mills HS) accumulated 22 assists on the night with libero Allia Mostafa (Columbia, MD, Oakland Mills HS) led the team with 10 digs.

The Dragons next travel out of state as Region XX opponent NOVA hosts HCC on Monday October 5th, match starts at 7:00 PM.
