Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Dragons Amazing Season Ends in Heartbreak

The Howard CC women's soccer team that hadn't lost since August was unceremoniously beaten in the Region XX semi-finals, losing to Montgomery College 1-0. The Dragons came into the game with a 13-game winning streak and were ranked 5th in the NJCAA Division III national poll, but were unable to defeat the same Montgomery team that knocked the Dragons out last year.

Going into the game, the Dragons incredible defense led by Lis Parks (Columbia, MD, St. Johns HS), Celeste Costabile (Ellicott City, MD, River Hill HS), and Taylor Nowaskey (Clarksville, MD, River Hill HS) along with goalkeeper Darcey Bodziony (Columbia, MD, Atholton HS) had posted 8 straight shutouts and 12 in the season. This incredible group once again dominated the play in this game, especially in the first half as the Dragons put a ton of pressure on the Raptors.

HCC almost took an early lead when a long free kick by Parks was hit beautifully over the Montgomery keeper, but was denied by the cross bar.

The Dragons appeared to have taken the lead in the first half when a corner kick by Parks found Rebeka Coughlin (Sykesville, MD, Liberty HS) on the edge of the box. Her cross found an open Elisa Mobley (Dayton, MD, Glenelg HS) on the back post who was able to brilliantly volley the ball into the net. Unfortunately, offsides was called on the play as it appeared the referees may have decided that Jen Craven (Damascus, MD, Damascus HS), who was in an offside position, attempted to play the ball and therefore caused the offsides call to be made.

In the 2nd half, the game evened out as Montgomery was able to turn it around. However, it wasn't until the 77th minute when a turnover by the Dragons in their own half allowed the Raptors to go on the fast break. Alejandra Ramos was able to pass the ball into the box which allowed Robin Hodgson to put the ball into the net.

HCC was able to get one more great chance with just 10 seconds left as Savanna Holt (West Friendship, MD, Glenelg HS) made a nice pass back to Coughlin who hit a good left-footed shot but was saved by the Montgomery keeper.

This loss ends the Dragons incredible season that included the 2nd MD JUCO championship in the history of the program and the first since 2006. Coach Seagroves and Coach Gramates will say goodby to an outstanding sophomore class including Bodziony, Mobley, Nowaskey, Parks, Craven, Coughlin, Heather Veli (Burtonsville, MD, Blake HS), Kaity Gaurin (Severn, MD, Old Mill HS), Becky Manelli (Woodstock, MD, Westminster HS), and Nikki Manning (Sykesville, MD, South Carroll HS).
