The HCC women's volleyball team lost an eccentric match to Montgomery College as the Dragons fell by the score of 3-1. With the loss, the Dragons fall to 4-5 in the conference while the Raptors improve to 5-2.
The Dragons showed everybody in attendance what the team is capable of as they were brilliant in the 1st set and were able to win it 25-23. HCC was up 19-13, but a 10-4 run by Montgomery tied the set at 23-23. With the momentum swinging towards the Raptors, HCC tightened up with some great defense including a diving dig by
Essence Holtzclaw (Atlanta, GA, Arundel HS) to help HCC take the set-winning point.
Montgomery came back strong in the 2nd set as Ionna Galani started to show her dominance in the match on her way to an incredible 18 kills. Attacking errors marred the Dragons efforts along with some sloppy ball handling led to MC taking the 2nd set 25-20.
With the match starting to heat up, MC got up to a big advantage of 18-12 in the 3rd set. After a service error,
Taylor Bowen (Mount Airy, MD, South Carroll HS) got control of the serve and the Dragons won 7 straight points to take a 19-18 lead highlighted by a couple of big kills by Holtzclaw. With incredible energy going on both sides, the Raptors proved too much for the Dragons and won the 3rd set 28-26.
The 4th set was much of the same inconsistency as MC went up 19-12 with attacking errors adding up. HCC was faced with match point at 24-18 and started to claw back with
Chelsea Parrinello (Finksburg, MD, Westminster HS) serving it all the way back to 24-22, but the last kill by Galani finished the match out.
The Dragons next travel to Pennsylvania Highlands CC on Saturday October 10th in a Region XX match slated to start at 2:00 PM.
