HCC Women's Basketball Suffers First Loss of Year

The Howard CC women's basketball team suffered the first loss of the season as they fell to NOVA CC 67-63. The Dragons fall to 2-1 on the season as they were unable to hold a 4th quarter lead against the Nighthawks. 

Playing in the new 4 quarter system of NJCAA women's basketball, the game proved to be quite entertaining as it included 15 lead changes. Going into halftime, HCC had a 33-31 lead thanks to a 21 point 2nd quarter. The Dragons still had a 1 point lead going into the final stanza, but NOVA's shooters got hot in the 4th quarter to close out the game.

Sophomore point guard Rebeka Coughlin (Sykesville, MD, Liberty HS) led the team with 19 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals, and 1 fantastic block as she played all 40 minutes in the game. Newcomer Sam Heisig (Glenelg, MD, Glenelg HS) provided a lot of help on both sides of the court as she had 12 points on 5-7 shooting including 2-3 behind the arc. Sophomore Lis Parks (Columbia, MD, St. Johns HS) recovered from her injuries suffered in the soccer season to provided 9 points and 7 rebounds coming off the bench.

NOVA was led by Christian Roberts and her 29 points and 12 rebounds as she was just 1 steal away from a triple-double.

Howard CC will host the Dragon Invitational this weekend as they face Hostos CC on Saturday and CCBC Catonsville on Sunday.
