Dragons Win Play-in Game, Lose in Semis at Region XX Tournament

Howard Community College hosted the Region XX/District G volleyball tournament this past weekend with 5 schools competing for one ticket to the national championships. The Dragons came in as the 4th seed and therefore were forced into a play-in game against Pennsylvania Highlands CC.

The match was a 5-set thriller with the Dragons losing the 1st set, winning the 2nd, losing the 3rd, dominating the 4th, then squeaking it out in a dramatic 5th set. HCC was led by Sophomore star Chelsea Parrinello (Finksburg, MD, Westminster HS) with 19 kills and 10 digs along with Essence Holtzclaw (Atlanta, GA, Arundel HS) and Stephanie Bartylla (Westminster, MD, Manchester Valley HS) with 10 kills each and Julia Boras (Baltimore, MD, Oakland Mills HS) with 39 assists.
The semi-finals match was a different story for the Dragons as they went up against the #1 seed in the tournament Lorain County CC. HCC was outmatched in this contest as LCCC won in straight sets, with Parrinello once again leading the team with 12 kills and Allia Mostafa (Columbia, MD, Oakland Mills HS) led the team in digs with 6. The Dragons finish the season with an impressive 19-14 record as coach Gary Troy showed a ton of improvement in just his 2nd year at HCC.

The Dragons volleyball team will sadly lose 3 great Sophomores in Parrinello, Bartylla, and Taylor Bowen (Mount Airy, MD, South Carroll HS), but coach Troy believes the squad will be even stronger next year.
