Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#6 Ranked HCC Draws Montgomery 1-1

The NJCAA Div III #6 ranked HCC Men's Soccer team was able to hold on for a 1-1 draw against conference rival Montgomery.

The Dragons lone goal was scored in just the 11th minute of the game utilizing their adeptness at the counter attack. Montgomery's corner kick was cleared out to Alec Smith (Columbia, MD, River Hill HS) who found Emmanuel Wright (Columbia, MD, Mt. Hebron HS) in the middle of the field. Wright's first touch was a brilliant okie doke move over the last defender which allowed him to dribble around the goalie and tap the ball into an empty net. The goal was Wright's second of the season as he looks to improve upon the 10 goal season he had last year.

After HCC took a 1-0 lead, the Raptors really started to take possession of the game as they put on nine shots over a 10 minute period of play.

Despite Montgomery's possession, the dangerous Dragons counter attack almost struck again as Wright again got behind the defense and around the goalie, but his shot was cleared off the line by defender Elmer Ramos.

The Dragons seemingly had doubled their lead when a cross by Kevin Zavarve (Silver Spring, MD, Kennedy HS) was headed into the goal by Christopher Rolon (Ellicott City, MD, Wilde Lake HS), but the assistant referee waived his flag for an apparent foul call.

The second half saw both teams take the physicality up another level as the fouls were adding up. HCC captain Tyler Costopoulos (Olney, MD, Sherwood HS) was shown a yellow card on a necessary foul as the last defender. He was soon joined in the referee's book by teammates Smith and Rolon.

Rolon was also responsible for the Raptors only goal as he took down a Montgomery player in the box and Bryan Reyes-Aranda was able to put the ensuing penalty kick into the low corner.,

The Dragons best chance in the 2nd half was deja vu all over again as Wright got around the Montgomery keeper and his shot was cleared out of an open goal, this time by Martin Moreno.

The game went through two scoreless periods of overtime where the heat and exhaustion seemingly had taken its toll with the last 20 minutes of the game being much less energetic than the first 90. The best chance came for Montgomery as a free kick was placed into the middle of the box, but the header was parried away by a diving save from Eric Gonzalez (Beltsville, MD, High Point HS).

The Dragons next game is Friday night as they travel to Frederick CC for another big conference game. Kick-off for that game is at 5 PM.
