Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Dragons Win Again at Frederick 3-2

The HCC women's soccer team won another late game thriller, winning on the road at Frederick CC 3-2. The win improves the Dragons record to 6-1 and their conference record at 3-0 is leading the MD JUCO.

Despite another game of dominating possession and shots, the Dragons were unable to find the net in the first half. Frederick was only able to manage 2 shots in the first stanza, but one of them put the Cougars on the scoreboard as a back pas from Becky Manelli (Woodstock, MD, Westminster HS) was intercepted by Frederick. HCC started their back-up goalkeeper Marisa Grant (Ellicott City, MD, Howard HS) in the game, and she was unable to regain possession of the ball as FCC took the 1-0 lead.

The Dragons inability to score continued all the way until the 79th minute when defender Taylor Nowaskey (Clarksville, MD, River Hill HS) made a bombing run into the box and crossed it over to Darcey Bodziony (Columbia, MD, Atholton HS) who hit a beautiful volley into the top corner for her first career collegiate goal.

Bodziony, normally the starting goalkeeper for HCC, continued to be involved with the Dragons attack as she was fouled in the box and was awarded a penalty kick which was saved by the Frederick keeper.

Howard CC was finally able to take the lead in the 88th minute when the Dragons earned their 7th corner kick of the game. It was once again Bodziony providing the magic as her corner kick curled beautifully into the goal for a 2-1 lead. The lead was extended just 45 seconds later as Nowaskey intercepted a pass and juked the FCC keeper which allowed her to score on an empty net.

This Dragons last goal proved to be critical as the Cougars went right down and their long distance shot was able to get over Grant and into the goal with just seconds left in the game but ultimately proved to not be enough to get FCC back in the game.

The final score made the game look a lot closer then it should have been as the Dragons constantly pressured the FCC goal highlighted by Howard's Jen Craven (Damascus, MD, Damascus HS) and her 8 shots on goal for the day.

The Dragons have a break in their schedule and will next travel to New York for a weekend swing at Suffolk CC on September 6th and then the Fashion Institute of Technology on Sunday the 27th; both games will kick off at noon.
