The Howard Community College (HCC) Women's Volleyball program beat Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) 3-2 Thursday night, to improve to (22-5) on the season and (8-3) in confrence.
NOVA took the first set in the match 26-24, the Dragons fought hard to keep the set close, but ultimately droping its first set in seven matches. Even though HCC lost the set it recorded 11 kills to NOVA's 8.
HCC bounced back strongly in the second set. The Dragons showed a lot of resolve and reversed the score winning it 26-24. HCC recorded 13 kills in this set, but the real difference came in the errors catagory; as HCC recorded five less errors from set one to two.
Set three went to NOVA, with a score of 25-20. HCC took the fourth set by a score of 25-21, which extended the match to a fifth and final set, and lended new life to the Dragons.Â
In the Fifth and deciding set, the Dragons came out with a lot of energy. HCC quickly put itself in a desireable spot by jumping to a 5-1 lead over the Nighthawks. The Dragons were able to stymie NOVA's only real run in the set, leading at the halfway point of the set 8-5. After switching sides, HCC and NOVA traded service errors, but the Dragons were able to string together enough points in a row to put the Nighthawks out of the set. HCC won the fifth set by a score of 15-8.
Riley Forquer (Woodbine, MD, Century HS) continued to show why she was named Maryland Junior College Student-Athlete of the month, by submiting yet another dominant performance recording a team leading 15 Kills, 4 Aces, and 25 Digs. Other major contributors to the Dragons win include:
Abigail Bakunas (Ellicott City, MD, Long Reach HS) who recorded 12 Kills,
Essence Holtzclaw (Atlanta, GA, Arundel HS) who recorded 3 Aces,
Alana Matson (Baltimore, MD, Seton Keough HS) and Taylor Anderson (Ellicott City, MD, Centennial HS) who each recorded 4 Blocks to tie for the team lead.
This win concludes the regular season portion of the Dragons' schedule, Next up, HCC will travel to Anne Arundel Community College for the Region XX tournament, which will take place beginning on October 28th. Stay tuned to the HCCs' website for times and opponents, which are still TBD. Â
