The win is the Dragons 5th in a row and their 10th straight victory at home as HCC continues to make the Dragons Lair a fortress. HCC's record improves to 6-1 on the season and their conference record goes to 2-0 as they sit on top of the standings. The game was remarkably even in many statistical categories with HCC winning the ground ball battle 41-39, turnovers 18-17, and AACC won face offs 13-12. The biggest discrepency was in the shot total with the Riverhawks accumulating 53 in the game compared to the Dragons 36.Knowing that they were up against a particularly tough opponent, the Dragons stressed the importance of jumping out early on the Riverhawks. That was exemplified with Austin Mitchell (Laurel, MD, Reservoir High School) set up Declan Whinnery (Middleton, WI, Middleton High School) for a goal just two minutes into the game  After AACC got that back a few minutes later, the Dragons went on a 5-0 run with goals from Jackson Downs (Olney, MD, Sherwood High School), Patrick O'Brien (Glenwood, MD, Glenelg High School), two from Kevin Curcio (Lancaster, PA, Manheim Township), and another for Whinnery. However, the Riverhawks would not go down quietly as they finished the first half on a 3-1 run of their own with goals sandwiching a Scott Dagnanleach (Hazel Grove, UK, Hazel Grove High School) man-up goal. In the 3rd quarter it was Mitchell scoring on a howitzer of a shot from Whinnery followed by a man up goal by Whinnery from Zach Beard (Clarksville, MD, River Hill High School). Riverhawk attackman Stone Boone scored his 4th goal of the game to start the 4th quarter and teammate Dylan Mansur finished his hat trick with five minutes left in the game to make it a one goal lead for the Dragons. Mitchell scored again 2 minutes later to give HCC what turned out to be the game-winning goal as AACC scored again with six seconds left but not enough time to extend the game.Whinnery led the Dragons for the second straight game with 3 goals and 1 assist before leaving the game early with a minor injury. Curcio also finished with a hat trick and Dagnanleach accumulated his usual 1 goal, 2 assist game before also leaving the game with a ding. O'Brien continued his streak of productivity with a goal and an assist while Beard had a couple of dimes. But the real story of the game was the excellent goaltending from HCC goalie Mark Bowser (Carlisle, PA, Carlisle High School), who faced 53 shots and tallied 19 saves as he showed off the immense talent that he possesses between the pipes. The defense for the Dragons was tested mightily in the game, but still received a great performance, particularly from captain Parese Williams (Wilmington NC, New Hanover HS) who led the way with 5 ground balls and 3 caused turnovers.Howard CC's next game involves a spring break trip up north to face New York based Suffolk CC on Wednesday March 30th, with the game scheduled to start at 3 PM.Print Friendly Version
