Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

CCBC Essex Overwhelms Dragons 11-7

Howard CC men's lacrosse goalie Mark Bowser (Carlisle, PA, Carlisle High School) came up with 14 big saves for the Dragons, but CCBC Essex was not to be denied in their own stadium as the Knights were victorious by the score of 11-7. The loss drops the Dragons to 9-3 on the season and 4-1 in the conference as they drop to 2nd in the MDJUCO.

The Dragons came out strong in the game as tensions were high and at times there were more words exchanged than hits or shots. Austin Mitchell (Laurel, MD, Reservoir High School) scored a pair of unassisted first quarter goals to give the Dragons a 3-2 lead after the first quarter. After the Knights tied it at 3-3, HCC built a two goal lead as Jackson Downs (Olney, MD, Sherwood High School) sniped the corner of the goal followed by a long run by Emmanuel Nwana (Silver Spring, MD, Springbrook High School) that he was able to finish beautifully.

That is when the Knights really stepped up their game as Derek Taylor scored his 2nd and 3rd goals of the game as part of a 4-goal run for Essex. Kevin Curcio (Lancaster, PA, Manheim Township) was able to net a point blank shot on a great feed from Scott Dagnanleach (Hazel Grove, UK, Hazel Grove High School) to stop the bleeding for the Dragons. Downs scored his second goal of the game to start the 4th quarter, but a string of bad penalties by the Dragons allowed the Knights to score three late man-up goals to close the game out.

On the defensive side, Luke Matanin (Ellicott City, MD, St. Paul's School) collected an astounding 12 ground balls in the game while also causing a couple of turnovers. Peter Emery (Ellicott City, MD, Howard High School) was able to tally three each of ground balls and caused turnovers, but it was evident that the Dragons were missing standout defender Parese Williams (Wilmington NC, New Hanover HS) who missed the game with an injury.

While HCC won the ground balls battle 31-30, CCBC Essex dominated most of the other team statistics such as face-offs 14-7, shots 49-24, and turnovers 25-18.

The Dragons will close out their regular season schedule on Saturday April 16th as they travel to Northern Virginia CC for a 12:30 PM game.
