Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

HCC Routs Frederick CC in 1st Round of Region XX Tournament

The Howard CC women's lacrosse team continued their impressive season as they beat Frederick CC 15-3 in a near flawless victory. The victory pushes the Dragons into the final four of the Region XX tournament that will be hosted by Howard Community College on May 7th and 8th.

In a game where the nationally ranked #4 Dragons were hosting the a Frederick CC squad in the first year of the program, the result of the contest was never truly in doubt. However, it was the manner in which the Dragons won the game that was truly impressive as HCC committed just 9 turnovers and dominated the Cougars in every team statistic. In fact the score would have been even more lopsided if not for the spectacular play by Cougars goalkeeper Mary Reich who finished the game with 22 saves in the game.

The first half in particular was a clinic in offensive efficiency as Silvia Kim (Clarksville, MD, River Hill High School) quarterbacked the offense to perfection as she accumulated 6 assists in the game. The goal scorers included the usual suspects as Rebeka Coughlin (Sykesville, MD, Liberty High School) finished with 5 goals and her partner in crime Cassidy Delaney (Ellicott City, MD, Marriotts Ridge High School) added 4 more. Ivana Yakovleff (Columbia, MD, Springbrook High School) was able to contribute her first hat trick of the season while Audrey Ford (Woodbine, MD, Glenelg HS) chipped in 2 goals and an assist.

The Dragons defense was rarely troubled in the game as the Cougars struggled mightily to get possession of the ball in their offensive zone. The Dragons won 15-19 draw controls and forced Frederick CC into turnovers on 14 of their 22 clear attempts.

While the Cougars goalkeeper was racking up the saves, Dragons goalie Ellie Garvey (Elkridge, MD, Francis Scott Key) was tested just five times in 52 minutes of play and only tallied three saves. With the game out of hand late in the second half, Coach Ponchione called a timeout to allow Coughlin to get some time in goal as she had for several minutes against Potomac State. While Coughlin saved all three shots she faced in the game, her save percentage took a big hit in this game as she allowed a goal in the two shots she faced.

The Dragons will play Anne Arundel CC in the semi-finals on Saturday May 7th at 4 PM in the Dragons Lair. HCC won both games between the two teams this year with their first one being an overtime thriller at Anne Arundel.
