Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Dragons Defeat AACC in Region XX Semi-Finals

For the first time in the history of the Howard CC women's lacrosse program, the Dragons are on their way to the NJCAA National Championship tournament after they defeated Anne Arundel CC 13-9 in the Region XX semi-finals. The victory for the #4 ranked Dragons sets up the third meeting of the year against the #3 ranked Harford CC Fighting Owls for the Region XX championship.

The Dragons had faced the Riverhawks twice already this year, and the two games were extremely different in nature but finished with the same result. The first game at AACC the Riverhawks got out to an early lead only for the Dragons to come back and win in overtime. In the second meeting, the Dragons dominated the game from start to finish and blew their opponents out.

This game was original as well as it was neck and neck for the first 50 minutes of the game before the Dragons pulled away late as they scored four of the last five goals of the game. The star of the game comes as no surprise as Cassidy Delaney (Ellicott City, MD, Marriotts Ridge High School) scored 7 goals and 2 assists while also leading the team with 4 draw controls. Rebeka Coughlin (Sykesville, MD, Liberty High School) scored 4 goals and 1 assist while barely missing out on a fifth when her highlight reel behind the back shot was saved by the Riverhawks goalie.

Silvia Kim (Clarksville, MD, River Hill High School) continued her impressive streak as she has tallied at least one assist in all but two games all season and with 5 assists on the day has now put in 11 assists in the two Region XX tournament games.

The Dragons defense was spectacular once again led by Danielle Spencer (Rockville, MD, Richard Montgomery High School) with 7 ground balls and 4 caused turnovers while Nicole Cote (Elkridge, MD, Long Reach High School) continued to be a leader on the line. Goalkeeper Ellie Garvey (Elkridge, MD, Francis Scott Key) tallied 8 saves on the day including a fantastic save in the last second of the first half with a free position shot.

Howard CC will take on Harford CC in the Region XX finals tomorrow, May 8th at 1:00 PM in the Dragons Lair.
