Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Season Ends at NJCAA Quarter-Finals

After earning their place into the NJCAA National Tournament for the second time in program history and the first since 2007, the #5 ranked Howard CC men's lacrosse team were unable to overcome #4 Genesse CC as they fell to the Cougars 19-9. The loss ends the entertaining season for the Dragons as they finish 11-5; the best season to date under the reign of Coach Erik Foust.

The Dragons appeared to be able to stick with the favored Cougars in the first quarter as it was a 3-3 game after the first stanza. Goalkeeper Mark Bowser (Carlisle, PA, Carlisle High School), who was just named the Region XX defensive MVP of the season, collected 6 saves in the first 16 minutes of the game and was doing all he could to keep the Dragons in the game. However, the second quarter was ultimately the downfall of the Dragons as a combination of injuries and costly turnovers led to Genesee leading 11-4 at halftime.

HCC did get a couple of hat tricks in the game as star attacking midfielder Austin Mitchell (Laurel, MD, Reservoir High School) finished his Dragons career in style with a hat trick in his final game before transferring to UMBC next year. Freshman midfielder Declan Whinnery (Middleton, WI, Middleton High School) scored his hat trick as he continues to show how much he will be counted on in next year's squad.

Whinnery was not the only freshman to put his name on the score sheet as attacker Kevin Curcio (Lancaster, PA, Manheim Township) put in two goals and Zach Beard (Clarksville, MD, River Hill High School) added one.

This must still be considered a successful season as the Dragons played in the Region XX tournament final for the first time in 9 years while also enjoying numerous highlights such as their continued dominance at the Dragons Lair and the overtime loss to #1 ranked Nassau CC that saw the Dragons just four seconds away from beating a #1 ranked team for the first time in school history. Ultimately, this stellar sophomore class will move on and Coach Foust will reload with another strong class on the way.
