Dragons Start 2016 Season With 2-0 Win Over AACC

In the Dragons first game of their 2016 season in which they are trying to defend their MD JUCO conference title, #8 ranked HCC came through with a big 2-0 win over Anne Arundel CC. The win puts the Dragons overall, conference, and regional records at 1-0 as the quirk in the schedule that had such an important game as the season opener paid off for HCC.

With just two returners from last year's team that went a perfect 7-0 to win the conference and 14-2 overall, there was going to be a lot of pressure on everyone to step up right away. The Dragons 3-woman defensive line led by sophomore Celeste Costabile (Ellicott City, MD, River Hill HS) was dominant allowing just five shots on the day. Three of those Riverhawk shots were on target, but freshman goalkeeper Savannah Hill (Laurel, MD, South Carroll HS) was up to the task on all three to earn her first collegiate shutout and win.

Despite dominating possession throughout the game, the Dragons were unable to get on the scoreboard in the first half despite peppering the Anne Arundel goal with shots. Freshman midfielder Devon Bodziony (Columbia, MD, Atholton HS) was among those with the best chances as she led the team with five shots, three of which were on goal but saved.

The Dragons finally broke through the Riverhawk defense in the 52nd minute as sophomore sensation Savanna Holt (West Friendship, MD, Glenelg High School) picked up where she left off last year with a great individual effort to slice through several defenders and scored her first of the season with a low shot that hit the far post and bounced into the goal. HCC was able to get an insurance goal 30 minutes later as a pair of freshman linked up as Brittany Wartman (Ellicott City, MD, Mt. Hebron HS) made a great pass to open up Lydia White (Columbia, MD, Cedar Brook Academy) who cut inside to the top of the 18 yard line and hit a low shot into the near corner.

With the cross-town season opener out of the way, the Dragons will now hit the road as they travel to Wilmington, NC to take on Oxford College of Emory University on Saturday August 27th before taking on Cape Fear CC on Sunday August 28th.
