Columbia, MD -
Hailey Montoya (Redlands, CA/Redlands East Valley) scored a couple of fantastic goals to lead the Dragons to a District H tournament championship to book their place in the NJCAA Div.3 National Tournament.
In a rematch of a regular season match that the Oxford College of Emory University Eagles won 2-1 overtime, it was the Dragons who took control of the match from start to finish.
After 30 minutes of possession and good chances, it was
Nikki Vieira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) who set up Montoya at the top of the box who took one dribble in and shot it into the net to give Howard the lead.
The Dragons got an insurance goal just before halftime when Montoya picked up the ball on a tough angle and 25 yards away from goal but hit a wonder strike into the top right corner of the net.
From there it came down to the defensive dominance of the back line as
Busi Sokoya (Columbia, MD/Long Reach),
Leigh McDonald (Loveland, CO/Mountain View),
Clara Milstead (Eldersburg, MD/Christiana Academy) and
Emily Delaney (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) along with defensive midfielder
Kristen Ogle (Sykesville, MD/Century) played a fantastic game to hold the Eagles to just six shots in the contest with
Cassandra Padellford (Truckee, CA/Truckee)Â making three saves.
The Dragons now move onto the National Tournament in Rockford, Illinois where they will make a run for the first National Championship in program history.
