Dragons Beat Nighthawks in 6-4 Shootout

Herndon, VA – A high scoring game that included six straight goals by the Dragons gave Howard an important victory over a regional rival. Anderson Mejia Marroquin (Elkridge, MD/Hammond) continued his hot streak with two more goals as Howard saw five different goal scorers in the game.

The Nighthawks got off to a great start to the game, drawing a penalty kick in the 8th minute with Bimosan Ghimire scoring from the spot to get NOVA up early.

It took 14 minutes for Howard to respond, but did so through one of the top goal scorers around as Marroquin spun around the defense to score in the left side of the net.

Howard took the lead four minutes later as a 50-50 ball in front of the net was buried by Alexander Estrada-Avila (Ellicott City, MD/Oakland Mills) for his first goal of the season. Daniel Fuentes (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) doubled up the lead with his second goal of the season two minutes later and Marroquin secured his brace in the 32nd minute on a breakaway.

It was the Dragons turn to draw a penalty kick in the 38th minute as Jose Garcia Monterrosa (El Salvador/Colegio San Franciso) scored his second goal of the year to give Howard a 5-1 lead going into halftime.

Coming out of the break, it was an Anthony Perez Rodriguez (Columbia, MD/Hammond) corner kick that found David Jeun (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) who scored his first of the season as the Dragons appeared to be running away with the contest. The Nighthawks scored just 40 seconds later then added another penalty kick and a fourth goal to make things interesting.

Goalkeeper Simon Bradford (Columbia, MD/Hammond) stopped eight on the day to earn his fourth victory of the year compared to NOVA who used three different goalkeepers in the contest.

Howard will return home to face Frederick on Thursday, September 20 at 4 PM in a make-up game from the original contest that was postponed due to weather.
