Columbia, MD – Howard rebounded nicely from a tough loss just 24 hours prior to kicking off against Cecil as the Dragons routed the Seahawks 8-2 thanks to hat tricks from
Daniel Fuentes (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) and
Anderson Mejia Marroquin (Elkridge, MD/Hammond).
Howard scored just two minutes into the game as
Noel Diaz (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) hit a diagonal through ball that Fuentes was able to run onto and pshoke it home for his third goal of the season.
Fuentes doubled up five minutes later as he simply ran past the Seahawks defense on the left wing and found the top of the net.
Howard scored again a minute later as a scramble in the Cecil box allowed
Eze Ruben (Laurel, MD/Laurel) to hammer it home for his first goal of his collegiate career.
Fuentes scored again just 40 seconds after that on a great through ball by
Anthony Perez Rodriguez (Columbia, MD/Hammond) to give Fuentes a hat trick in under 10 minutes of play.
As the Dragons rotated their squad, Cecil began to feel more confident in possession and were able to cut into Howard's lead when a Patrick Kelly corner kick was pinballed around the Dragons box until Matthew Christian was able to hit it in from point blank range to make it a 4-1 Howard lead after 20 minutes.
The always dangerous Marroquin finally got a goal for his efforts as a pass across goal by
Matias Britos (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) was tapped in by Marroquin for his team leading 10
th goal of the season.
Marroquin secured a brace early in the second half with
Pa Lung (Myanmar/Long Reach HS) picking up an assist and then later completed a hat trick on a penalty kick after 75 minutes of play.
Gionni Gupta (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) added a goal in the second half on a rebound from Britos hitting the cross bar.
Adam Russo (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carrol) made his season debut in between the pipes for Howard and made some solid plays as more of a sweeper than a keeper, but also made an impressive sprawling save late in the game.
The Dragons will next host another conference foe on Wednesday, September 26 at 4 PM as the College of Southern Maryland Hawks come to town. The Hawks are currently 1-3 on the season and 1-2 in conference play with losses against NOVA, CCBC Catonsville and Hagerstown along with a 1-0 win over Cecil.
