Howard Tames Hawks 5-0

Columbia, MD – The Dragons took care of business as they were able to see out a spritely College of Southern Maryland Hawks squad 5-0.
Howard looked in control from start to finish as they out-shot the Hawks 38-1 in the contest, with Dragons goalkeeper Hailey Murray (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) a mere spectator for the entire contest.

Rebecca Herriotts (Glenwood, MD/Mt. Airy Christian) set the pace for the Dragons as she created a couple of great early chances with one shot that caromed off the post and another that went just over the net.

After a frustrating 20 minutes of scoreless play, a fantastic give-and-go broke Howard through as Rylee Nieman (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll) passed to Cassandra Padellford (Truckee, CA/Truckee) who tapped it back to Nieman for a goal from the middle of the box.

Herriotts work down the left side paid off in the 33rd minute as she opened up space and crossed to Madalyn Nichols (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg) who one-timed the shot into the net with Herriotts picking up her first assist of the season.

With just a few minutes left in the first half, a great pass into the box by Mya McConnell (Columbia, MD/Howard) found Nichols who dropped it off to an open Clara Janush (Laurel, MD/Reservoir). The central defender hit a powerful shot that went off the top of the Southern Maryland goalkeeper's hands and leaked into the net for a third Howard goal.

It took the Dragons just three minutes into the second half to add to their lead as Lillian Scott (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) took the ball down the right side and centered the ball into the Path of Nichols who powered a shot into the roof of the net.

A great pass into the box saw Janush get taken down in the goal box, but her ensuing penalty shot went right at goalkeeper Camille Cooley who came up with eight saves on the contest. The Dragons would collect the rebound and eventually get the ball out to Scott on the right side who's cross found Nieman in the middle of the box for another insurance goal.

Howard will hit the road for five straight games including a pair in New York starting with Nassau on Friday, October 4 at 2:30 PM.
