Dragons Drop Hawks In Overtime

Hagerstown, MD – The Dragons continued their fantastic start to the season, as they were able to pull out a 72-70 overtime victory over the Hagerstown Hawks. At 3-1, this represents the best start for the Howard women's basketball program since the 2015-16 team that went 7-1 to begin the season.

Howard's shooting woes continued as they were just 25% from the field and 17% from long range in the contest. However, it was once again the defensive excellence of the Dragons that surged them forward as they forced 29 turnovers including five steals by Mia McCormick (Philadelphia, PA/River Hill) and four by Tyteana Seymore (Washington, D.C./Columbia Heights) as Howard lead by as much as 12 late in the first half.

Hagerstown chipped away at the Dragons in the third quarter and was able to tie the game in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter with a three pointer. Brianna Jones (Largo, MD/Largo) and Kiyah King (Cambridge, MD/Oakland Mills) put in back-to-back layups to restore the Howard lead, but the Hawks answered back with an 8-0 run as the Dragons went four scoreless minutes.

McCormick was able to utilize her aggressiveness to pull the Dragons back as she went to the free throw line on three consecutive possessions, making five of six to get the lead back for Howard. Ashlyn McInerney (Hyattsville, MD/Hammond) followed that up with a massive three pointer with two minutes left to put the Dragons up 59-56. The back and forth continued as Hagerstown made a three pointer and a layup to go ahead by two.

After the teams exchanged free throws, Seymore knocked down a clutch shot from long range with 34 seconds left to give Howard a two point lead, but a Hawks jumper by Kha'niya Evans tied the game at 64-64. Seymore attempted a buzzer beating three pointer that was just off the mark as the game went to an extra period.

In overtime, the Dragons jumped all over the hosts as Seymore made a steal and layup followed by a McInerney three to put Howard ahead for good as they were able to hold out from there.

McCormick led the way with 18 points while McInerney added 15 and Seymore chipped in 11. Jones earned her third double-double in four games with 10 points and 16 rebounds including nine on the offensive side.

The Dragons will head to New Jersey next as they take on Rowan Gloucester on Saturday, November 16 at 1 PM.
