Dryden, NY -
Rebecca Herriotts (Glenwood, MD/Mt. Airy Christian) scored a goal late in the second half as the Dragons upset the #3 ranked Mohawk Valley Hawks 1-0 in the national tournament consolation game as the Howard women's soccer program ended their season on a high note for the second consecutive season.
After suffering a heartbreaking loss in the quarterfinal game less than 24 hours prior, the Dragons played through the difficult circumstances in cold, windy weather with a field that still had snow sitting on it.
Both teams showed fatigue from playing on back-to-back days throughout the contest, with scoring opportunities few and far between. Goalkeeper
Hailey Murray (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) was put to the test on numerous occasions, and came away with eight saves to earn her eighth shutout of the season as she was named to the All-Tournament team.
Stuck in a deadlock for much of the game, the Dragons finally broke through in the 72nd minute as Toler hit a perfectly weighted through ball that was helped along by
Ellen Campbell (Highland, MD/Reservoir) to Herriotts who hit a first time shot off the inside of the far post and into the net for her third goal of the season to put Howard ahead.
The stingy Dragons defense was able to close out the game from there as they shut down a Hawks team that averaged scoring eight goals a game coming into the contest.
Howard's season comes to an end as they will now be forced to say good bye to perhaps the best sophomore class in program history that includes Toler, Campbell,
Claudia Brush (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville),
Emily Delaney (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville),
Cassandra Padellford (Truckee, CA/Truckee),
Rylee Nieman (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll), and
Busi Sokoya (Columbia, MD/Long Reach).
