Batavia, NY - Five Dragons scored in double-digits led by a season high 20 points by
Naquan Williams-Day (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) as Howard beat a powerful Monroe Community College Tribunes team that was getting national ranking votes less than a week ago.
Howard fell behind early, but the Tribunes momentum was stopped when
Deven Richmond (Bowie, MD/DeMatha) hit a three pointer followed by five straight points from
Cole Harshman (Baltimore, MD/Dulaney) to give the Dragons a 10-9 lead. Monroe surged forward again to take an eight point lead, but once again Howard had the answer on back-to-back three pointers by Williams-Day and
Kelvin Sellman (Temple Hills, MD/Crossland).
Sellman continued to come through with big points late in the first half as he hit a long range shot then was fouled from behind to arc and buried all three freebies then finished out the half with a big dunk, but the Dragons trailed by four at the break.
Richmond once again brought the energy early in the second half as he made a lay-up on a brilliant Williams-Day pass on the back cut and then made a fast break lay-up on the transition after one of
Joel Webb's (Forestville, MD/Wise) four blocks in the game. Webb followed that up with back-to-back points in the paint followed by two straight fast break dunks by Richmond to tie the game at 60-60.
With the Dragons down by two with 10 minutes left, Williams-Day demanded the ball on the post and took advantage with consecutive baskets to give Howard a lead that they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.
