Mia McCormick (Philadelphia, PA/River Hill) hit a game winning floater with two seconds left as the Dragons avenged a tough loss earlier in the season against Prince George's to defeat the Owls 77-76.
Howard trailed by as much as 15 in the first half as the Owls' Trinity Workman had a big opening 20 minutes. The Dragons clawed their way back to tie the game late in the third quarter with the two teams then going back and forth.Â
With the Dragons down by five midway through the fourth quarter, McCormick hit a tough layup followed by a three pointer to take a 70-68 lead. Prince George's responded back and regained a 74-71 lead with two minutes left. A jumper by
Brianna Jones (Largo, MD/Largo) and another layup by McCormick took the lead back for Howard, but the Owls came right back with a layup to take the lead with 43 seconds left.
After both teams missed chances to score valuable points, the Dragons inbounded the ball to McCormick with six seconds left as she drove into the lane and hit a game winning floater to clinch a dramatic victory.
Jones had another phenomenal game with 25 points, 18 rebounds, eight steals and six assists. McCormick bounced back with 24 points and eight rebounds while McInerney scored 15 points including three long range makes in the first half.
Cassandra Padellford (Truckee, CA/Truckee) was a warrior in the paint with 12 rebounds in 21 valuable minutes of play.
The Dragons will now prepare for a tough conference foe as Chesapeake comes to town on Friday, January 31 at 5 PM.
