Columbia, MD – The Dragons continued to add to the best season in the history of the program as they were able to hold on for a 57-55 victory over the Cecil Seahawks. The regular season finale win puts another stamp on arguably the best season in program history in an astonishing revival of the women's basketball team.
Howard got out to a flying start with a 21-10 lead in the first quarter with the Dragons seemingly in control of the game and took a 10 point lead into halftime. Cecil made things hard on Howard in the third quarter as the Seahawks saw themselves down just a single point after three quarters. Cecil continued their momentum as they took their first lead of the game in the fourth quarter.
With the Dragons struggling to hit shots from the field, they worked the ball inside more and found themselves at the free throw line plenty. With Howard trailing by five midway through the fourth quarter,
Brianna Jones (Largo, MD/Largo) scored six straight Dragon points from the free throw line. The Dragons were still trailing 55-54 with less than a minute left when
Mia McCormick (Philadelphia, PA/River Hill) stole the ball away and made a fast break layup to put Howard ahead as they were able to hold on for win 19 on the season.
Jones led the way with 18 points and 12 rebounds for what has become a routine double-double for the sophomore forward. McCormick scored 17 with 11 rebounds and
Ashlyn McInerney (Hyattsville, MD/Hammond) added 10 points.
Kyrstin Bowen (Westminster, MD/Mount Airy Christian) was a monster in the paint with 15 blocks and 12 rebounds for the center.
The Dragons will now prepare for the regional tournament hosted by Howard Community College with the quarterfinals of the eight team tournament taking place on Thursday, March 5 with the time and opponent to be determined.
