Columbia, MD - The Howard CC men's soccer team got out to a fantastic start in their season opener, knocking off their neighboring rival Carroll Lynx 8-0. The Dragons had eight different goalscorers in the rout as they were able pick up a dominating shut out win.
The Lynx came out with great effort and energy early in the game, but the Dragons finally broke through in the 26th minute as leading scorer from last year
Leonard Dunor (Columbia, MD/Sheyenne) left off where he started with his first goal of the year. True freshman
Evan Doten (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) followed that up with his first collegiate goal just a few minutes later and
Trevor Kerr (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) scored two minutes after that on
Mahmoud Mansour's (Columbia, MD/Home School) second assist of the game.
Head coach
Stefan Draganov, in his 18th season leading the Dragons, was able to rotate out a number of his starters in the second half as he showed off the impressive depth of the squad.
Abdoul Camara (Burtonsville, MD/High Point),
Nathan Portillo (Laurel, MD/Laurel), Brandaon Ruano,
Emmanuel Pope (Columbia, MD/Hammond) and
Anold Muyomba (Columbia, MD/Kennedy) all scored second half goals as the Dragons took complete control of the contest.
Freshman goalkeeper
Lesbin Monroy (Laurel, MD/Laurel)Â picked up three saves in the game to pick up a shutout victory in his first appearance.
The Dragons will get to enjoy the friendly confines of their home stadium in their next match as they host Southern Maryland on Tuesday, August 31 at 4 PM.
