Butler, PA - The Dragons played four matches in two days and were able to come away with their first win of the season as part of the marathon weekend of events.
Howard CC kicked off the series with a match against Hocking College played at Westmoreland County who was able to sweep the straight sets 25-20, 25-16, 25-16 in a balanced approach for the Dragons.Â
In the night game of the tri-match, the Dragons were able to defeat Westmoreland in a four set match that was close from start to finish.
Kayla Hendershot (Columbia, MD/Hammond) was a star with 18 kills while
Samantha Matney (Elkridge, MD/Howard) and
Mikaela Brewer (Gaithersburg, MD/Coventant Life) added six kills each.
Cassandra Marks (Columbia, MD/Long Reach) chipped in with a career high five aces in the match and the Dragons middle had two blocks.
Eryca Sterling (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) pulled up a team high 24 digs played their best match of the year to secure the victory.
On day two of the festivities, the Dragons started the morning with a match against a strong Butler County side and lost in straight sets 25-12, 25-22, 25-10.
In the final match of the weekend, it was only fitting for the Dragons to play in their first five set match of the season, going the distance against Pennsylvania Highlands before ultimately falling 25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 21-25, 15-8. The Dragons lost the first two sets before storming back to win the next two and force the decisive fifth set. Despite having all the momentum on their side, fatigue finally set in as the Dragons ran out of steam in the final set. Hendershot had 14 kills with Matney and Harwood chipping in eight each. Brewer added 32 assists to her name and Sterling had a remarkable 43 digs in the match.
The Dragons will have just two days to rest before getting back at it against Harford on Tuesday, September 28 at 6 PM.
