Arnold, MD - A valiant effort by the Dragons fell short as the Anne Arundel Riverhawks defeated the Dragons in the Region 20 tournament quarterfinals 9-1 and 7-5 in the best of three series.
Howard got out to a fantastic start as
Katelyn Burdette (Frederick, MD/Walkersville) put the Dragons ahead in game one with a solo shot to left field. The Riverhawks responded back with two runs in the second, five in the third, and another two in the fourth. The Dragons did get a rally started in the top of the fifth after a
Sarah Phelps (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) single and a
Sage Huber (West Friendship, MD/Glenelg) double, but Howard was unable to keep it going from there.
In game two, the Riverhawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead capped by a two run home run in the third inning. Howard fought back in the top of the fifth as
Erika Goodwin (Laurel, MD/Hammond) led off with a walk followed by
Brittney Dix (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) getting on base thanks to an error and Huber reached first on a dropped third strike.
Grace Tolle (Woodstock, MD/Marriotts Ridge) drew a bases loaded walk followed by Burdette driving in two more on a single up the middle.
Anne Arundel scored three in the bottom half of the inning to immediately answer the Dragons comeback attempt. But the Dragons did not go down quietly as the top of the seventh saw a Dix lead off single followed up a Huber single. After Huber stole second, Burdette again came through for the Dragons with a two RBI double on a line drive down the left field line to bring the tying run to the plate. The rally was sadly ended there to put an end to the Dragons season despite a solid pitching performance from
Samantha Hobert (Elkridge, MD/Howard), who took the mound for every pitch of the doubleheader.
