Batavia, NY - The Dragons put forth a much improved effort in their swing through upstate New York, but were unable to pick up a win as they fell to Monroe Community College 8-0 followed by a loss to Genesee Community College 3-1.
In the weekend opener, Howard CC showed a lot of heart in holding a top 10 ranked NJCAA Division I team to just a 3-0 lead at halftime. The powerful Tribunes squad broke through more in the second half as they were able to run away with the win, but not without a remarkable 20 save performance by goalkeeper
Olivia Jackson (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) who made numerous diving saves in a fantastic effort.
For the second half of the trip, the Dragons gave up two early goals to the Genesee Cougars despite chances from
Molly Nichols (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg) and
Sage Huber (West Friendship, MD/Glenelg) pushing the Howard CC offense forward. The Dragons were able to net their first goal of the season after Huber stole the ball away on a high press and was taken down in the box which allowed
Mireida Castillo (Falls Church, VA/Falls Church) to score from the penalty spot in the top left corner.Â
Genesee responded back with a fast break goal just two minutes later that broke the hopes of the Dragons, but another great performance by Jackson with 14 more saves kept Howard in it until the end.
The Dragons will play their first regional game when they take on rivals CCBC Essex on Tuesday, September 6 at 7 PM.
