Dragons prevail over the Skipjacks of Chesapeake College 3-1.
Wye Mills, MD - Howard took a little bit of time to find their rhythm early in the first set against Chesapeake with a few errors on both sides of the ball, but ultimately found their way soon after with a number of strong serves and swings on offense and a strong defensive presence at the net that kept the Skipjacks on their toes. Confidence overflowed on the court for the Dragons after a 10 point scoring run, but was broken after a ball handling error. Chesapeake was able to earn four more points before a final kill by
Aaliyah Murfree (Laurel, MD/Laurel)Â closes the set 25-12.
Chesapeake battled back in the second set with a number of well placed balls, and game-changing defensive plays that found a way to break down Howard's offense. Howard did their best to battle back against the Skipjacks by adding 3 more points to the scoreboard putting them at 20 points to the skipjacks 24, but their comeback ultimately ended after a hitting error gives Chesapeake their final point.Â
Howard recovered extremely well in the third-set with all hitters involved and making great swings.
Vanessa Miller (Germantown, MD/Gaithersburg) found a number of open shots on the court that made way for a 5 point scoring run.
Sydnei Harmon (Largo, MD/Flowers) followed on defense and offense putting up a solid block at the net, and made herself available for a number of huge swings that the Chesapeake defense couldn't handle. The Dragons found themselves up by 10 points once more with a score of 16-6, and continued to fly by the Skipjacks, finishing out the third set 25-16.
Dragons got off to a bit of a slow start in the fourth set of the match after a number of ball control errors put the Skipjacks up 4-0 at the start. The Skipjacks started the set with alot of high energy and continued to find the holes in the Dragon defense. But the Dragons found some separation after Harmon hammers out a number of big swings that bring back the intensity for the Dragons. Dragons continued to stay sound on defense and strong at the net and came out with a win in the fourth set 25-17.
Sydnei Harmon (Largo, MD/Flowers) had an astounding 16 kills and 2 blocks to finish out the game, making that her season high for kills thus far.
Vanessa Miller (Germantown, MD/Gaithersburg) added 8 kills and surpasses her original season high of 19 digs after earning a whopping 31.
Makayla Holland (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) followed right behind Miller 7 kills with 30 digs,
Lal Mawi (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) had 5 kills and 2 aces, and
Sarah McKenzie (Mount Airy, MD/Glenelg) also added 20 assists to her total for the year.Â
The Dragons remain at 8th place in the region with a record of 10-7 overall and continue to do their best to hold on to a playoff spot. They will play their final home game this Friday, October 13 against the Lynx of Carroll College at 7 PM.Â
