Loch Sheldrake, NY - A super exciting debut for the 2023-24 Howard Women's basketball team (1-0) they took down the Tribunes of Monroe College (1-1) 63-42 in the opening day of the Sullivan Tip-Off Classic held at SUNY Sullivan.
A bit of a slow start for both sides, but the Dragons took a 15-12 lead in the first quarter and continued to push back in the second half outscoring the Tribunes 18-12 with a strong offensive presence by the Region 20 First Team Honoree
Mikiyah Mallett (Pasadena, MD/Old Mill), bringing the halftime score to 33-24 as they hit the locker room.
Replenished and ready, the Dragons continued to keep the pace of the game on their side by adding another 18 points in the 3rd quarter and keeping the Tribunes at bay only allowing 9 points in the completed 10 minutes as
Sydnei Harmon (Largo, MD/C.H. Flowers) kept things clean on the glass with a total of 5 defensive boards and 2 on offense. The Dragons continued to cruise their way through the Tribunes adding 12 more points to the scoreboard to really bring things home and solidify their 63-42 win over Monroe Community College.
Mallett led the Dragons racking up a total of 14 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals followed by
Lania Nick (Annapolis, MD/Glen Burnie) with 10 points, and 3 rebounds off the bench.
Madison Carey (Brandywine, MD/Frederick Douglass) added 9 points and 2 rebounds, and Harmon with a huge impact on both sides of the ball, rounds things out with 7 points and 7 rebounds.
Jaylah Putman (Jacksonville, FL/Long Reach) finished with 6 points off the bench, and
Kayla Allen (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) and
Jenna Ehlers (Philadelphia, PA/Solanco) added 5 points each and 6 rebounds combined.
The Dragons will close out the 2023 SUNY Sullivan Classic Sunday, November 5 against Host team Sullivan County at 3 PM.
