Myrtle Beach, SC - The Dragons competed in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic and performed well in the eight games over four days, winning three games.
The Dragons lost their first game to Catawba 12-3, but came back in the afternoon game to take down Massachusetts Maritime Academy 9-5. Howard jumped ahead 4-0 in the game highlighted by a
Madeline Lackey (Manchester, MD/Manchester Valley) RBI double. With Howard down 5-4 going into the seventh inning, the Dragons fought back with
Alyssa Kelly (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) tying the game with an RBI triple.
Samantha Hobert (Elkridge, MD/Howard) followed that up with an RBI triple of her own.
Ashleigh Gerber (Marriottsville, MD/Marriotts Ridge) led the way with four RBI in the game including a three run homer in the seventh to close out the win.
Kasey Smith (Jessup, MD/Hammond) got her first win as a Dragon with four strikeouts over seven innings.
On day two, the Dragons were able to hang with #6 nationally ranked Danville, ultimately falling 7-1 with a solid pitching performance by Hobert. The Dragons once again came back stronger in the afternoon game with a dramatic walk off win to defeat USC Sumter 11-10. Kelly led the way with a 5-5 performance, scoring twice while
Katelyn Burdette (Frederick, MD/Walkersville) went 3-4 with a couple RBI and two runs. Kelly came in to relieve
Kasey Smith (Jessup, MD/Hammond) in the second inning and picked up the win by closing out the rest of the game.
On day three, the Dragons started the day off with a dominating 10-2 win over Schoolcraft highlighted by a bases loaded triple by Smith to clear the bases.
Sage Huber (West Friendship, MD/Glenelg) also went 2-2 with two RBI, two runs and a double in the game as Smith picked up the win with three strikeouts over five innings pitched. In the afternoon game, the Dragons once again took on the nationally ranked Danville Jaguars and fell 8-0.
On the final day of the tournament, Schoolcraft was able to get the Dragons back in game one as they defeated Howard 10-6. Huber went 3-4 in the game while Burdette also went 3-4 with a couple RBI and a triple. In the final game of the tournament, the Dragons fell to Brunswick 11-10 in a dramatic end to the game. With Howard behind 11-5 in the top of the seventh, the Dragons scored five runs and had the tying run on base before seeing the rally fall just short. Huber and Burdette once again had two hits each while Smith added another three RBI triple.
The Dragons will return to Maryland as they take on Anne Arundel on Wednesday, March 8 at 2 PM.
