Elicott City, MD – An exciting doubleheader against the Notre Dame of Maryland Gators saw the Dragons softball team fall 23-10 and 4-3 in the doubleheader sweep.
Game one started with fireworks as a Notre Dame two run homer was answered by
Danielle Thompson (Frederick, MD/Tuscarora) with a three run shot over the right field fence.
Brittney Dix (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) doubled in
Katelyn Burdette (Frederick, MD/Walkersville) and the Dragons took a 4-2 lead after the first. Notre Dame continued to hit the ball hard with a couple more home runs, building up a 9-4 lead after three innings.
The Dragons fought back once again with five runs in the fourth inning highlighted by a two RBI single by
Ashleigh Gerber (Marriottsville, MD/Marriotts Ridge) to knot the game up at 9-9. The Gators Lilyann Hafner hit her third home run of the game in the sixth inning, but Gerber was able to drive in
Sarah Phelps (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) in the bottom half to tie the game at 10-10 after six innings of play. Notre Dame then proceeded to score 13 runs in the top of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach for the Dragons.
In the night cap,
Samantha Hobert (Elkridge, MD/Howard) pitched an absolute gem, holding the Gators offense scoreless over the first five innings. Some great help from her defense chipped in as well including a bullet from
Alyssa Kelly (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) from centerfield to nail the runner tagging up for home to get the inning ending double play in the top of the second. Dix and
Sage Huber (West Friendship, MD/Glenelg) had RBI singles in the second inning while
Alyssa Kelly (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) drove in Huber in the bottom of the fifth as Howard led 3-0 with six outs to go.
Hafner homered for the fourth time of the day to start things off as the Gators rallied for three runs in the inning to tie the game. One more Notre Dame home run in the top of the seventh sealed the fate for Howard despite the great efforts by Hobert on the mound.
The Dragons will return home on short rest as they host the College of Southern Maryland in a Region 20 matchup on Saturday, March 18 at 1 & 3 PM.
