Dragons Take Down Nationally Ranked Owls 94-88

LARGO, MD – The Dragons came up with another tough road win as they were able to defeat the nationally ranked #8 (division III) Prince George's Owls by a score of 94-88. The Dragons improve to 17-5 on the season and 5-3 in Maryland Juco play.

Howard jumped out to an early lead on a run started with a Shane Taylor (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) pull up jumper. Jalen Bowie (Frederick, MD/Frederick) blocked a shot on the other side leading to an Emanuel Henriques (Baltimore, MD/Benjamin Franklin) fast break layup and an Andrew Mills (Owings Mills, MD/New Town) post up move to get the Dragons ahead 11-5. Ryan Conway (Towson, MD/Dulaney) completed a three point play to extend the Dragons lead to eight midway through the first half as Howard played fantastic defense in the paint to keep a high scoring Owls team down.

Prince George's made a late run in the first half, cutting the Howard lead down to two, but a tough mid-range jumper by John Thomas (Baltimore, MD/Patterson) and a three pointer by Christian Dean (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) swung the momentum back towards the Dragons. Taylor hit another fade away jump shot and followed that by taking a charge the other way. Conway swished a three pointer from the top of the key and Bowie threw down an emphatic dunk followed by Dean putting in a buzzer beating layup to finish the first half with Howard ahead 40-29.

Howard started the second half like they ended the first half with lots of positivity as a Conway three pointer brought the Dragon lead up to 16. Prince George's found their stride midway through the second half as they went on a 12-0 run to make it a one possession game. Mills answered back with a three pointer from the top of the key and then stole the ball away and sent Enriques ahead for a fast break to give the Dragons back some breathing room.

Once again the Owls would not go down without a fight, cutting the Dragon lead down to five before a clutch Conway three pointer from the wing forced a timeout. Dean found a cutting O'Meech Wilson (Glen Burnie, MD/North County) for a big time slam to get the Dragon lead back to double digits as the methodical offense of the Dragons continued to pay dividends. From there the Dragons were able to hit enough free throws to close the game out and secure a tough win.

Conway led the way for Howard with 21 points with Bowie close behind at 16 points and 6 rebounds. Henriques scored 13 with 8 rebounds while Mills added 12 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. Taylor scored 11 points with 3 steals followed by Dean and Wilson with 9 and 8 respectively.

The Dragons will continue their road warrior ways as they travel to western Pennsylvania to take on Penn Highlands on Monday, January 29 at 6 PM.
