Carey Leads Dragons Past Owls 63-59

LARGO, MD – Another tough road test for the Dragons was answered as they were able to prevail in a low scoring contest against the Prince George's Owls by the score of 63-59. The Dragons improve to 12-3 on the season remain tied for first in the Region 20 standings at 5-0.

Madison Carey (Brandywine, MD/Frederick Douglass) got out to a good start, scoring the first four Dragon points before a nice feed by Nhaikyia Smith (Waldorf, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) found Sydnei Harmon (Largo, MD/C.H. Flowers) for a layup. Harmon added another layup on the next possession followed later by a Jaylah Putman (Jacksonville, FL/Long Reach) layup, but the Dragons saw themselves down 15-11 after the first quarter.

The second quarter saw Harmon start to dominate the paint more as a three point play followed by a Mikiyah Mallett (Pasadena, MD/Old Mill) layup to tie the game at 18-18. The Dragons continued to hit free throws and used that to tie the game at 26-26 before Harmon went down with an injury.

Howard opened up the offense in the third quarter as an 8-0 run spurned them forward as a Carey offensive rebound and layup gave the Dragons their biggest lead of the game at 43-34. Jenna Ehlers (Philadelphia, PA/Solanco) made an acrobatic layup in traffic followed by a Mallett layup, but a Prince George's three pointer at the buzzer cut the Howard lead to 47-43 at the end of the third quarter.

Carey started out the fourth quarter well with a nice mid-range jumper as the Dragons extended their lead back to seven, but the Owls answered back with a 6-0 run in the low scoring game. Putman was able to make a tough layup to break the streak, but it was the baseline drive and layup by Carey that truly iced the game to secure the victory for Howard. Mallett grabbed an offensive board and was able to convert the hoop and harm as the Dragons put the game out of reach for the home team.

Carey led the way for Howard with 16 points and 9 rebounds along with 4 steals in arguably her biggest game of the season. Harmon scored 11 points, all in the first half. Putman added 12 points off the bench while Mallett scored 7 points with 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Smith and Ehlers chipped in 5 points each to round out the Howard scoring.

The Dragons will get a week of rest before traveling to nearby rivals Montgomery College on Friday, February 2 at 5:30 PM. The Raptors are currently 10-6 on the year and 2-1 in Region 20 play. Montgomery won the last meeting between the two teams in a 78-75 Raptor win in February 2023, which broke a streak of two straight Howard victories in the storied rivalry.
