CATONSVILLE, MD - The Howard Dragons won the Region 20 regular season title in dramatic fashion on a buzzer beater for the second straight game, defeating CCBC Catonsville by the score of 83-81. The win puts the Dragons at 23-6 on the year and 11-2 for the region as they secure the #1 seed in the regional tournament as they knocked off the 10-3 Cardinals in the de facto regular season title game.
The Dragons struggled from the floor early in the game as they fell behind 20-9 midway through the first half. Howard started to work their way back into the game as a Conway three pointer and a three point play by
O'Meech Wilson (Glen Burnie, MD/North County) led the Dragons to cutting the deficit down to three. Catonsville answered right back and were able to hit a three pointer at the buzzer to take a 39-29 lead at halftime.
Howard fell back to a 13 point deficit after six minutes of play in the second half before
Ryan Conway (Towson, MD/Dulaney) entered the floor and took over the game.
Shane Taylor (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) and Emmanuel Henriques made tough layups followed by back-to-back buckets by Conway made it a 52-50 game midway through the second half. The Cardinals took it back up to a seven point lead with Conway answering back with another couple threes. The two teams exchanged baskets back and forth for the next 10 minutes as they were scoring at will.
The Dragons finally took the lead back with two and a half minutes left on another Conway three pointer at 76-75. Taylor hit a mid-range jumper off an in-bounds play followed by a Conway layup to put Howard up by three with a minute left. After the two teams exchanged free throws, Catonsville scored on a tip-in with 23 seconds left to tie the game at 81-81. After a timeout, Conway took the ball and scored a left handed floater at the buzzer to win the game and the regular season title for Howard.
Conway scored 29 points in the second half and 34 in the game to lead all scorers. Taylor finished with 20 points while Wilson added 8 points and 11 rebounds. Mills scored 7 points with 5 rebounds and 4 assists while
John Thomas (Baltimore, MD/Patterson) scored 6.
The Dragons will now wait to see who they play in the Region 20 tournament quarterfinals where they will "host" the game at Cecil College on Tuesday, March 5 at 7 PM.
