ARNOLD, MD - A dramatic doubleheader that felt like a roller coaster ride saw the Dragons split with the Anne Arundel Riverhawks, winning game one 8-3 before losing game two 13-12.
Anne Arundel took the early lead in game one as they saw an RBI triple followed by a two-run home run to take a 3-0 lead in the first. Howard began to chip away at that as
Giana Sablan (Guam/Our Lady of Guam) tripled down the left field line to score
Holly Ryan (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) as Sablan would also score on an error. Sablan drove in the pinch running
Cassie Litchfield (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg) in the third inning to tie the game at 3-3.
The Dragons took their first lead of the game in the top of the fourth as
Raegan Perkes (Laurel, MD/Laurel) hit a triple to deep left to score
Madeline Lackey (Manchester, MD/Manchester Valley). Howard would keep the bats hot as a Sablan double in the fifth scored
Alyssa Kelly (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) and
Jordan Bayles (Laurel, MD/Spencerville Adventist) drove in Lackey in the sixth.
Kat Wisor (Crofton, MD/Arundel) capped the rally with a two-run bomb to deep left field to add a couple more insurance runs. Wisor took the win on the mound, throwing a complete game gem with four strikeouts.
Game two was a wild ride from start to finish as the Riverhawks got a two-run homer in the first inning to lead early on. Howard rallied in the top of the second as
Morgan Ryan (Laurel, MD/Atholton) drove in Sablan and Lackey added an RBI single to bring in
Micah Howell (Columbia, MD/Atholton). Anne Arundel would pile on four runs in the seond and another in the third to lead 7-2.
An action packed fourth inning saw the Dragons score two runs as Kelly drove in Perkes and Lackey thanks to some miscues by the Anne Arundel defense. Perkes singled in Ryan in the fifth to cut into the lead, but Anne Arundel answered with a two-run homer in the bottom half to make it a 9-5 Riverhawks lead.Â
The insanity was highlighted by a seventh inning to remember that started with Sablan getting a leadoff hit by pitch. Ryan cranked a two-run shot over the left field fence to cut into the Riverhawks lead. With two outs and a runner on base, Perkes heroically crushed a home run over the left center fence to tie the game. Kelly and Pence hit back-to-back doubles as the Dragons took the lead, then Wisor went deep to center field for the Dragons' third two-run home run of the inning to put Howard ahead by three.Â
Anne Arundel came right back in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases up with one out. A single through the left side of the infield scored one run and kept the bases loaded. The next batter hit a single to right field, with two runs scoring but the Dragons were able to throw out a third runner attempting to score at the plate as the game was tied 12-12. The next Riverhawk batter was able to hit a single off the third base bag to score the game winning run on a walk off.
The Dragons will next travel to Chesapeake College on Wednesday, March 20 for a 3 PM doubleheader.
