Mills Leads Dragons to Regional Finals

NORTH EAST, MD - The Howard Dragons were able to avenge a regular season loss as they were able power past the College of Southern Maryland Hawks 89-75. The win moves the Dragons to 25-6 on the year as they will take on CCBC Catonsville in the Region 20 championship game.

Andrew Mills (Owings Mills, MD/New Town) asserted his will on the game early on as he scored eight straight Howard points early on to give the Dragons the early lead. O'Meech Wilson (Glen Burnie, MD/North County) joined his fellow front-court mate with a couple of big plays including a powerful slam to put Howard ahead by 10. The Dragons extended that lead to 17 before a couple of three pointers by the Hawks brought it down to a 40-29 Howard lead at halftime.

Southern Maryland continued to work their way back early in the second half, making it a four point game midway through the second half. Shane Taylor (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) answered back with a dribble drive into a layup with Wilson following suit on the next possession. After a Hawks three pointer to make it an eight point game, Ryan Conway (Towson, MD/Dulaney) hit the dagger as he hit a long range shot while being fouled to complete the four point play and put the game away for good.

Mills finished the game with 23 points and 14 rebounds with 3 blocks in one of his most dominating games of the season. Taylor finished with a quiet 18 points while gritting through all 40 minutes in the game with a couple of steals. Conway scored 16 while Wilson and Jaden Johnson (Upper Marlboro, MD/Dr. Henry A. Wise) scored 10 each.

The Dragons will now go to their third regional final in four years as they will take on the #2 seed CCBC Catonsville Cardinals on Saturday, March 9 at 3 PM. The Dragons defeated Catonsville 83-81 in the regular season finale on February 28 thanks to a dramatic buzzer beater by Conway to win the regular season title. The Cardinals advanced to the finals by defeating the #3 seed CCBC Dundalk in the semifinals.
