Putman Leads Total Team Effort Against Allegany

Columbia, MD - Howard Community College's women's basketball team won their sixth-straight game on Sunday with a 53-31 defeat of Allegany College of Maryland.

The Dragons notched their ninth win in their last ten games with a dominant defensive performance. The Dragons held the Trojans to single digits in three of the four quarters, recording 28 steals and forcing 34 turnovers. Asaani Offer (Annapolis, MD/Catonsville) scored a double-double, while Jaylah Putman (Jacksonville, FL/Long Reach) hit four threes.

Howard controlled the first two quarters with ease, holding the Trojans to nine and seven points respectively. Asaani Offer (Annapolis, MD/Catonsville) controlled the paint, shutting down Allegany's interior shooters. In the second quarter, Howard's outside shooting woke up with a 17-7 run. Jaylah Putman (Jacksonville, FL/Long Reach) smashed three straight three-pointers, giving Howard a 32-16 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, the Dragons began to slip up, allowing Allegany back into the game. The Trojans battled back into a single-digit deficit, but foul trouble ended their comeback attempt. A tough layup by Tamir Whittle (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) snapped the Trojans momentum, and four-straight made free throws built Howard's lead back up. In the fourth, the Dragons defense clamped down. Allegany wouldn't score a point until the final seconds, while Howard coasted on tough defense.

Putman finished with four made threes, 21 points, and four rebounds. Offer scored a double-double with ten points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and eight steals. Whittle scored six points, four assists, and six steals, while Hannah Chambers (Columbia, MD/Hammond) added five points, eleven rebounds, two blocks, and four steals. McKenzi Walters (Falls Church, VA/George C. Marshall) added seven rebounds. two blocks, and three steals on the defensive front.

The Dragons next face off against WVU Potomac State in a game with major postseason implications on Wednesday, January 29 at 5:00 PM.
