Takoma Park, MD - The Howard Community College Dragons' JV men's basketball team fell 59-33 on Thursday night to the Washinton Adventist University Shock.
The loss, Howard's second of the week, dropped the Dragons to 0-9 on the season. Howard was held to a season-low 33 points on just 24% shooting. Howard was out-rebounded 45-35 and committed 28 turnovers.
The closest the Dragons would get to the lead came in the opening minutes as
Jasper Hanna (Washington, DC/E.L. Haynes) tied the contest at 2-2 on a fastbreak layup. A
Bliden Elung (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) jumper kept the game close five minutes in, but the Shock responded with a 25-0 run over the next ten minutes. Several Howard baskets in the final minutes of the half stemmed the bleeding, but down over 20 points, the Dragons would need a miracle to fight back.
The Dragons offense got some momentum rolling in the second, and behind a big layup by
Kanye McMahon (Lexington Park, MD/Chopticon), they lowered the deficit to just 19 points. Unfortunately, that would be the closest the Dragons would get down the stretch as another multi-score run by the Shock brought their lead back to where it started. Howard emptied its' bench late in the period as the Dragons fell 59-33.
Kanye McMahon (Lexington Park, MD/Chopticon) led the Dragons with ten points and eight rebounds.
Jasper Hanna (Washington, DC/E.L. Haynes) came close to a double-double with seven points and ten rebounds.
Bliden Elung (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) added six points and two steals, while
Nehemiah Smith (Bronx, NY/Laurel) notched five points, eight rebounds, and two blocks.
Stewart Long (Annapolis, MD/Springdale Prep) came off the bench to add four rebounds and two assists.
For their next matchup, the Dragons will rematch the Shock at home on Thursday, February 13 at 6:00 PM.
